you tin can do it someday, the leaner lives in the filter media. just make sure to employ quondam tank h2o or dechlorinated tap h2o.

Clean it whenever, even if information technology's cycling.

The bacteria lives on the filter media (sponge, ceramic or plastic beads, etc). Simply siphon out some water rinse out the filter media with tank water. NEVER use tap water that hasn't been dechlorinated.

I'grand not an expert simply that'south not a skilful idea.
Your filter isn't that muddied all the same
He likewise hasn't build a colony of skilful bacteria.
It'southward basically flushing your cycling process downwardly the drain

Peradventure others will chime in

BB live on the surface and within the crevices of the filter media. a quick swish in tank water or dechlorinated water won't hurt it.

I clean mine every week when I do water changes. my polyfill and course sponge are covered in gunk. i'm overstocked with common and comet goldfish, no problems with the cycle.

I personally would not make clean the filter while the tank is still cycling. Y'all desire to proceed equally of bacteria that's building up until you're cycled.

I wouldnt make clean it. Shouldnt be a need to if you're cycling the tank and haven't had any fish waste. Personally, even when I use cycled media from an established tank to get-go a new tank, I don't mess with the filter for the first 4-six weeks anyway. About of my filters only get "cleaned" once every 3-4 months.

Well. I take a 75G with a Fluval 206 on it, I personally (non recommended) clean it once every 4 or six months or and so...but for general maintenance.

In your case, I'd say, wait three months later cycle, if the filter is running fine, and in that location is no clogging, I'd go out it be (unless you wanna change the carbon, and so do so each month, get out the filter lone unless there's clogging/it'due south very dirty).

If you desire to make clean it more oftentimes you can, never hurts to aid the filter catamenia a little stronger, but don't rinse the bacterial stones through tap water, you can rinse them out with dechlorinated (similar temp) water or tank water, but not tap water. The biggest thing, is that you're changing the carbon in it in one case a calendar month (not really that you're 'cleaning' it, simply if information technology needs a proficient cleaning, do then-- will depend on your bio load, how much yous feed, if you have live plants, etc.) AND, that'due south only if you really feel the need to employ carbon, I personally don't. Which is why I don't go into my filter as often.

Carbon actually just deals with chemicals that're in the tank that 'shouldn't be' (like meds, cleaners), odors, and discolorations in the water. IMO it does lilliputian for keeping a healthy bicycle and a make clean/clear tank...which is what the filter is meant to do.

In the 75G mentioned, I have an oscar, severum, iv convicts, two parrotfish, two pleco, 1 rapheal catfish, and 1 firemouth. I keep some java fern in at that place which clogs my filter on occassion, but that's my stocking.

I'm not an practiced but that'south non a good idea.
Your filter isn't that dirty still
He also hasn't build a colony of practiced bacteria.

Maybe others will chinkle in

You can't rinse off the leaner, especially with the water it essentially lives in.

Fifty-fifty though the colony of bacteria isn't fully grown, cleaning the sponge won't (with tank water) won't kill or hurt any of it. It will stay exactly where it is. The simply way you'll be able to kill that bacteria is by not feeding it ammonia, letting it dry out, or killing it with antibiotics or chlorine.

There'southward a reason nosotros don't treat bacterial infections by rinsing the expanse with water! Lol

Oh and I do agree that if you have no fish, there'southward no reason to clean information technology since there'due south zilch to clean.

But as long as you clean it with tank water, it won't touch your bacteria.

In your case, I'd say, wait three months after cycle, if the filter is running fine, and there is no clogging, I'd leave it be (unless you wanna change the carbon, and so do so each month, get out the filter lone unless there'south clogging/information technology'south very dirty).

If y'all want to make clean it more often you can, never hurts to assist the filter flow a petty stronger, but don't rinse the bacterial stones through tap h2o, you can rinse them out with dechlorinated (like temp) water or tank water, only not tap water. The biggest thing, is that y'all're irresolute the carbon in it once a month (not really that you're 'cleaning' it, but if information technology needs a skilful cleaning, do so-- will depend on your bio load, how much you feed, if you take alive plants, etc.) AND, that's only if you really experience the need to use carbon, I personally don't. Which is why I don't get into my filter as oftentimes.

Carbon really merely deals with chemicals that're in the tank that 'shouldn't be' (like meds, cleaners), odors, and discolorations in the water. IMO it does little for keeping a healthy cycle and a make clean/clear tank...which is what the filter is meant to do.

. I throw the water out off the filter. Wash the sponge a lil in tank h2o. I don't wash the stones at all
But nosotros all got different ways I judge in Sounds like a expert tank lol
You lot should have gotten the fluval 406 for the stock
